DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 1, 2017

SMOKE:

Central Canada...
Numerous wildfires burning in Saskatchewan and remnant dense smoke from
widespread fires in British Columbia continue to produce a large area
of moderate to dense smoke. This smoke covers much of eastern Alberta,
all of Saskatchewan and Manitoba and western Ontario.

California and the Pacific Northwest to the upper Mississippi Valley...
Wildfires over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana and northern
California are producing moderate to dense smoke. Plumes of smoke from
the fires in California and Oregon are generally moving to the south
and extend into the Pacific and across northern California, southeast
Oregon and northern Nevada. Smoke from the fires in Washington, Idaho
and Montana is moving to the east and southeast and extends across most
of eastern Washington, Idaho, Montana and into the northern Plains and
upper Mississippi Valley.

Central and Southern Plains...
Mostly light remnant smoke from the western fires can be seen dropping
southward across the central and southern Plains into Texas and wrapping
eastward into the northwest Gulf of Mexico. The smoke also extends back
to the west across New Mexico and Arizona into southern California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
