DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z September 11, 2017

SMOKE:

Northern Rockies/Central United States/Eastern and Northeastern United
States/Central and Eastern Canada...
A very large mass of thin density smoke ranged from northeastern
California northeastward to Oregon and Washington, then eastward
across northern Idaho and Montana, then covers the entire central
and northeastern United States and portions of the Mid-Atlantic. The
thinner density smoke was also present over portions of south-central
Canada and all of eastern Canada. Within the thin density smoke area,
moderately dense to thick smoke was seen covering portions of northern
Idaho, Montana, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma,
Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio,
New York, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut,
Rhode Island, and New Jersey. Moderately dense to thick smoke was
also observed in portions of southern Saskatchewan, eastern Ontario,
and eastern Quebec. The source for much of this smoke was the ongoing
wildfire activity occurring over central and northern Idaho, western
Montana, and portions of central Canada.

DUST:

Central Atlantic...
Saharan dust was present north and northeast of the Windward Islands
and around the eastern periphery of Hurricane Jose.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
