DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z September 17, 2017

SMOKE:
Pacific Coast/British Columbia and Alberta border with the CONUS...
Wildfires located throughout northwestern California, western Oregon,
northern Washington, and northwestern Montana were observed contributing
to a thin to moderately dense smoke layer. This layer stretched from the
Alberta/Montana border to just off the coast of central California. Cloud
cover blankets much of eastern and central Oregon and Washington,
shrouding any smoke that may be present across the region. However,
given the observation of wildfires in the area and the observation of
smoke in the area around the cloud cover, at least light density smoke
is likely present over the region

Great Lakes Region and New England...
A region of varying density remnant smoke was observed extending eastward
from the Great Lakes into the Canadian Maritimes and out over the northern
Atlantic Ocean, with a narrow strip extending south into central Kentucky.

DUST:
North central Atlantic...
A layer of Saharan dust was seen to the northeast of Bermuda. This layer
was drifting off to the north.

Lesser Antilles and points east...
A second layer of Saharan dust was observed over the Lesser Antilles
extending east towards Tropical Storm Maria. This layer of Saharan dust
was seen drifting westward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
