DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 28, 2017

SMOKE:
Northern California/Southwestern Oregon...
The long lived wildfire near the Trinity-Tehama county border in northern
California continued to emit moderately dense to thick smoke which moved
to the west during the afternoon. A larger surrounding area of thinner
density smoke extended offshore of northern California and moved to the
north during the afternoon reaching into extreme southwestern Oregon.

Middle Mississippi Valley...
Numerous seasonal agricultural fires mainly over southeastern Missouri
and eastern Arkansas were producing thin density smoke plumes with
some combining to form larger patches of smoke affecting portions
of southeastern Missouri, western Kentucky, western Tennessee, and
northeastern Arkansas.

DUST:
Caribbean/Hispaniola/Puerto Rico...
The area of Saharan dust continues to be visible as it pushed slowly to
the west across much of the eastern Caribbean, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico,
and nearing the eastern part of Cuba and Jamaica.

Earlier This Morning...
SMOKE:
Southeastern Georgia...
Thin density remnant smoke was observed over southeastern Georgia
extending off the coast into the near-shore Atlantic Ocean. This feature
was seen drifting south with the flow around Hurricane Maria.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
