DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 8, 2017

SMOKE:

California to Four Corners...
Light to moderately dense smoke from the Lion fire in the southern Sierras
was seen extending from the fire to the southeast to the southern tip
of Nevada and then curling to the northeast across northern Arizona over
the Four Corners area and into southwest Colorado.

Northern California...
Light smoke from a fire in Siskiyou county near the Oregon border was
moving to the southwest and off the coast into the Pacific.

Arizona...
A fire in far southern Coconino county and another in the southwest
part of the county were producing light to moderately dense smoke plumes
that extended to the east-northeast reaching into northwest New Mexico
by sunset.

DUST:

Nevada/Utah/California...
A broad swath of central and southern Nevada, southwest Utah and Mono and
Inyo counties in California was affected by areas of light to moderately
dense blowing dust this afternoon and evening. Strong and gusty winds
were kicking up the dust from the numerous dry lake beds and the loose
soils in this area and the dust was seen quickly sweeping south across the
region. An area of light blowing dust was moving to the south southwest
from the Carson Sink near Stillwater.

A broad area of light blowing dust was seen over much of the central
valley in California due to strong northerly winds.

Oregon...
An area of light blowing dust was seen coming from Summer Lake in southern
Oregon and moving to the southwest.

Mexico into Arizona...
An area of light to moderately dense blowing dust was seen moving north
from the desert in Sonora Mexico and into southern Arizona.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
