DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 15, 2017

SMOKE

Lower Mississippi River Valley:
Numerous agricultural burns are collectively responsible for a thin
density smoke plume covering northern Louisiana, eastern Arkansas,
northwestern Mississippi, western Tennessee, southeastern Missouri,
and southern Illinois.

South Central Canada:
Similarly, several agricultural fires in Canada have produced a thin
density smoke plume over south central Saskatchewan, southwestern
Manitoba, and northern North Dakota.

California:
Wildfires continue to burn in California resulting in at least thin
remnant smoke over much of the state. Smoke from the fires in the
Napa/Sonoma region are producing moderate and heavy smoke moving southwest
over the Pacific Ocean. Remnant moderate smoke is also observed locally
near the active fires in central California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
