DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z October 23, 2017

SMOKE:
Arizona...
The Tipover East prescribed burn within Kaibab National Forest in
north-central Arizona was seen emitting smoke of varying density, most
of which is thin density. The smoke emitted from this prescribed burn
was observed traveling south across central Arizona, stretching as far
south as Phoenix.

British Columbia...
Two fires in southern British Columbia were noted as producing small smoke
plumes. As other fires have been detected throughout central British
Columbia where cloud cover exists, it is likely that there other small
smoke plumes were shrouded by that cloud cover.

DUST:
Southern Florida/Bahamas/Western North Atlantic Ocean...
A thin layer of Saharan dust was observed extending from Florida
eastward into two separate cyclonic features, one south of Bermuda and
one southeast of Bermuda. This strip of Saharan Dust appeared to be
moving to the east with the two cyclonic features.

Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean...
Saharan dust was also observed across much of the Caribbean Sea extending
eastward into the Tropical North Atlantic. This feature is thinner than
observations from over the past few days. This feature appeared to be
moving west towards Honduras and Nicaragua.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
