DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z October 27, 2017

SMOKE:
Arizona/New Mexico/Texas...
Fires throughout Arizona and New Mexico were observed emitting moderate
to dense smoke plumes. These fires were contributing significant smoke
plumes across eastern Arizona and central New Mexico, with a remnant
smoke feature over northern and central Texas. These features were seen
moving off towards the east or east-southeast.

Gulf Coast and the Southeast...
Numerous fires producing light density smoke plumes were seen from
southern Texas to the Mississippi Valley to South Carolina and
Florida. Many of the smoke plumes were moving off to the northeast,
with the main exception being those in Florida, which were moving to
the south or southwest.

British Columbia/Pacific Northwest...
Numerous fires throughout British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon were
seen producing light to moderately dense smoke. In British Columbia,
the smoke plumes were moving to the southeast. Throughout Washington
and Oregon, the smoke plumes were generally moving off toward the west.

Northern Baja California...
A moderate density smoke plume was observed emanating from a fire in
the northwest part of Baja California. Another fire to the south of
the aforementioned fire was also producing a light density smoke plume
extending east-southeast over the northern Gulf of California.

DUST:
Northern Chihuahua...
Blowing dust was seen blowing off a couple of dry riverbeds throughout
northern Chihuahua approaching the western Texas panhandle.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
