DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z November 11, 2017

SMOKE:
Louisiana...
Numerous seasonal fires were detected across portions of south central
Louisiana resulting in many individual thin density smoke plumes which
spread mainly to the south and southwest. Some of the plumes merged to
form a somewhat larger patch of smoke over far south central Louisiana.

Arizona...
At least a half dozen fires were noted across portions of Arizona with
individual smoke plumes of primarily thin density moving off to the east
and northeast.

Pacific Northwest/Southwestern Canada...
Once again, scattered seasonal fires were present over western Montana,
the northern half of Idaho, and the western portions of Washington
and Oregon with a larger concentration of fires detected over British
Columbia and Alberta in southwestern Canada. However, very little smoke
was visible in satellite imagery due to cloudiness in the region.

DUST:
Alaska...
An area of blowing glacial silt was seen in the afternoon and evening
at the mouth of the Copper River and wrapping south and then southeast
into an area of low pressure in the far northeast Gulf of Alaska.

An area of light re-suspended volcanic ash from the Katmai volcano was
seen moving to the southeast across Kodiak Island and into the Gulf
of Alaska.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
