DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z November 25, 2017

SMOKE:
Central and Southeastern US...
Scattered seasonal fires were detected across the Central and Southeastern
portions of the US this evening with several fires producing thin
density localized smoke plumes. The largest concentration of smoke was
observed over south-central Louisiana and were being carried towards the
southeast. A second area of individualized smoke was seen south of Lake
Okeechobee in Florida.

Arizona...
A fire located in east-central Arizona is producing light density smoke
that stretched towards the southeast and just into southwestern New
Mexico. The fire located in north-central Arizona continued to burn
throughout the day producing a thin light density plume which was seen
to extend in the southward direction.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
