DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z December 6, 2017

SMOKE:
Southern California...
The aggregation of intense wildfires throughout Ventura and Los Angeles
Counties in California was producing a smoke plume that was extending
west-southwest over the northern Channel Islands and into the Pacific
Ocean for a few hundred miles. A few other small smoke plumes in far
southwestern San Bernardino County were seen moving off to the southwest.

Southeastern CONUS...
A couple of smoke plumes were visible through scattered to broken cloud
cover across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. These smoke plumes
were seen moving off to the north-northeast ahead of a passing cold front.

Northern Arizona...
A burn in Kaibab National Forest, just north of the Grand Canyon, was
seen emitting smoke this afternoon. The smoke was traveling toward the
west along the Colorado River

Oregon/Northern and Central California...
A couple of fires throughout Oregon and California were observed
emitting smoke this afternoon. These smoke plumes were moving off to the
west-northwest, save for the fire in Yosemite National Park. The smoke
from that fire was moving to the southwest across the San Joaquin Valley.

Western Canada...
A handful of fires in British Columbia and central Alberta were seen
producing smoke plumes. These smoke plumes were moving off to the
southeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
