DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1715Z December 9, 2017

SMOKE:
Southern California:
Moderately dense to very dense smoke from the southern California
wildfires, particularly the Thomas fire in Ventura county, continued to
stream westward into the Pacific this morning. The smoke was seen moving
across the northern Channel Islands. The full extent of the smoke over
the Pacific was difficult to determine due to the presence of extensive
cloud cover.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
