DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z April 24, 2018

Southwestern US...
Fires in north central and east central Arizona and southwestern New
Mexico were emitting moderately dense to locally thick smoke which spread
generally to the east during the day.

Central US...
A large amount of seasonal fires were detected across central and
eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska, Iowa, and northwestern Missouri
with many individual thin density smoke plumes visible. A number of
the plumes merged to form larger patches of smoke with the majority of
the smoke moving to the west or southwest. Cloudiness across Arkansas,
much of Missouri, Illinois, and points to the east and southeast of
there prevented fire and smoke detection in satellite imagery.

Gulf of Mexico/Bay of Campeche...
A large mass of thin density smoke attributed to the significant amount
of seasonal burning occurring in Mexico and Central America was seen
across the Bay of Campeche and up over the central and eastern Gulf of
Mexico. Thicker areas of smoke were noted closer to some of the fire
activity over Mexico and Central America.

Earlier This Morning...
SMOKE:
Pennsylvania...
Fires in the eastern part of the state were observed producing smoke
traveling northwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
