DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE
IMAGERY THROUGH 1802Z, May 29, 2018.

SMOKE:
Much of the Southern Half of Canada/Northern US...
A number of wildfires scattered especially across the region stretching
from northeastern British Columbia to northeastern Alberta were emitting
thin to moderately dense smoke which moved to the east during the early
afternoon. These wildfires were also primarily responsible for a much
larger region of thin density smoke which covered a sizable part of
the southern half of Canada from northeast British Columbia to southern
Quebec.

Mexico...
Seasonal fires were detected across portions of Mexico and Central America
resulting in a large coverage of thin to moderately dense smoke across
much of the region and offshore to the south over the Pacific.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
