DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE
IMAGERY THROUGH 0012 UTC July 14, 2018.

SMOKE:
Canada...
Areas of light density remnant smoke likely originating from Russia and
wildfires in eastern Canada continue to be observed over much of northern
Canada this evening. The smoke stretches from the southeastern Northwest
Territories eastward across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and then farther
into northern Ontario and northern Quebec. The largest wildfire appears
to be located in north-central Manitoba and is producing moderately
dense smoke that was observed traveling eastward.

Eastern United States...
A small area of light density smoke covers the Southeast stretching from
Georgia to  southeastern Pennsylvania.


DUST:
Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico...
An area of Saharan dust is  observed moving generally westward across
the tropical Atlantic and extends over the entire southern Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING
DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO
VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS
EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
