DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE
IMAGERY THROUGH 0230 UTC July 16, 2018.

SMOKE:
Ontario/Canada...
Several wildfires throughout western and central Ontario are producing
plumes of high-density smoke. This smoke is moving east towards James Bay.

Central Sierras...
The Ferguson Fire in the Central Sierras was observed emitting dense
smoke this afternoon and evening. The low level smoke was moving in all
different directions over a 50 mile radius from the fire accumulating over
northern San Joaquin Valley.A pyrocumulus was also seen forming around
2230UTC, injecting heavy-density smoke into the higher atmosphere with a
fast displacement of the plume towards east and into the state of Nevada.


DUST:
Texas/Gulf of Mexico...
An area of suspended dust/aerosol linked to long-range transport from
the Sahara was seen spreading across the western Gulf of Mexico and into
south Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS
OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING
DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO
VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS
EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
