DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE:
Canada...
Wildfires continue in western British Columbia and are currently spreading
a thin plume to the east-southeast to the southeastern portion of the
province.  A residual thin smoke plume persists across the southern part
of Nunavut.

Western U.S...
Persistent wildfires across central Washington, western Oregon, and
northern California are producing thin to locally moderate density plumes
generally spreading to the south and southeast.  A couple of wildfires are
found in northeastern Nevada with thin smoke plumes currently confined
to within 50 miles of the source points.  A large wildfire near Douglas
WY is emitting a thin plume moving off to the northeast with a moderate
density plume in the immediate vicinity of the point source.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM
THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.  TYPICALLY
OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO
DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND
OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
