DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1640Z September 6, 2018.

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest...
Fires in southern British Columbia, northern Washington, southwest Oregon,
and northern California are producing moderate to thick plumes of smoke
traveling east and observed reaching North Dakota. Large plumes of thick
smoke were seen covering central Oregon and southeast Washington. The
primary source of this thick smoke is from the Delta fire in northern
California.

Much of northern and central Canada...
A large layer of light to moderate density remnant smoke was observed
covering much of northern and central Canada from the Northwest
Territories to western Quebec. this smoke was becoming incorporated
into a few upper level systems...one over north-central Canada and
the other over Hudson Bay. The likely source for this smoke is China,
as visible imagery from Himawari suggests smoke extending northeastward
from Shanghai across Japan and then north into the Sea of Okhotsk.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
