DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE:
Southeast CONUS...
Numerous likely agricultural burns were observed producing mainly thin
smoke this afternoon from Texas into southern Virginia. The smoke was
moving anticyclonically around a sprawling surface high pressure centered
over northern Alabama. Due to cumulus cloud coverage obscuring the view,
there is likely to be a little more smoke than analyzed.

Pacific NW and British Columbia...
From central British Columbia into Oregon, a large number of fires
were producing thin to moderate density smoke this evening. Much of the
analyzed smoke was moving off toward the east (central BC) or southeast
(southern BC into Oregon).

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
