SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S...
Scattered fires linked to seasonal burning were resulting in mainly thin
density smoke plumes from Louisiana to central Georgia.

California...
A number of fires with accompanying thin density smoke were noted
primarily over northern California during the day.

Pacific Northwest/Southwestern Canada...
Many seasonal fires were detected over portions of Washington and Oregon
as well as British Columbia and Alberta in southwestern Canada though
only some thin density smoke was visible in satellite imagery with around
a dozen or so of these fires.

DUST:
Northern Nevada/Northwestern Utah...
A significant patch of rather dense blowing dust emanated from sources
in western Elko County of north central Nevada and spread to the south
during the afternoon reaching well down into central and east central
Nevada by sunset. Farther to the east, a smaller less dense area of
blowing dust originated from sources in far northwestern Utah and spread
to the south and southeast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
