DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY

SMOKE:
Pacific Northwest/Southern British Columbia...
Various density smoke plumes were observed emanating from fires throughout
southern British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. The smoke from
these fires was moving clockwise around an anti-cyclone centered over
south-central British Columbia. The Klondike Fire in southwestern Oregon
was producing heavy smoke the was moving out into the Pacific Ocean
before moving south.

California...
A few light to moderate density smoke plumes were observed moving
south along the San Joaquin Valley. Separate fires in the Sierras were
moving into the valley and then south with the other smoke plumes in
the valley. Some of the smoke from the Klondike Fire was just making
its way ashore in northern California.

Southeastern CONUS...
A few smoke plumes from agricultural burns across the southeastern
US were observed moving around an anti-cyclone off the coast in the
Atlantic Ocean. There were likely more smoke plumes than analyzed,
as fair-weather cumulus cloud cover obscured visibility.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
