DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z March 15, 2019

SMOKE:
Florida...
Several agricultural and prescribed fires throughout the Florida peninsula
were seen producing mainly light smoke moving predominately northward. One
notable fire near Cape Canaveral was emitting heavy-density smoke for
several hours this afternoon.

Gulf of Mexico...
Numerous fires across southern Mexico and northern Central America
were seen to be producing plumes of smoke with westward and northward
components of motion. These plumes were contributing to a large area of
remnant smoke that also likely includes smoke from gas flaring in the
Bay of Campeche and smoke from previous days' fires in the region. This
large area extended across much of the western Gulf of Mexico as far
north as the Texas and Louisiana coasts.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
