DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z March 20, 2019

SMOKE:

Southeastern CONUS...
From Louisiana into southern South Carolina, dozens of presumably
agricultural burns were observed emitting smoke this morning into
the early afternoon. The associated smoke plumes were moving around a
northeast-southwest oriented surface ridge across the Appalachians into
northern Georgia. In addition to these prescribed burns, two areas of
remnant smoke from yesterday's fire activity was observed. One stretches
across central Alabama, eastern and southern Mississippi, and far eastern
Louisiana around Lake Pontchartrain that was barely moving. A second
was observed across eastern Texas, western Louisiana, and portions of
the northwestern Gulf of Mexico that was moving off toward the west.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS.  AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED.  USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
