DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z March 24, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S...
A tremendous amount of seasonal burning was detected across the
Southeastern U.S. along with numerous smoke plumes of mainly thin
density especially from Mississippi eastward to Florida, Georgia,
and the Carolinas. While the majority of the smoke was thin density,
some of these smoke plumes were locally moderate to thick in density.

Midwest...
A very significant amount of seasonal burning was also noted across
Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, along with southeastern Missouri,
and eastern Arkansas though only a little smoke was seen due to cloud
interference.

Eastern Pacific...
A large area of what was believed to be mainly dust transported across
the Pacific from Asia was visible over a sizable part of the eastern
Pacific off the West Coast of the U.S.

JS

Earlier This Morning...
Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic off the Southeast Coast...
Remnant smoke from yesterday's fires in the Southeast was seen moving to
the west and southwest into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Remnant smoke
was also seen off the Southeast Coast moving farther offshore over the
Atlantic Ocean.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
