DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z March 25, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S....
Numerous agricultural fires were observed across the southeastern U.S. A
great amount of light density smokes could be seen in Alabama and some
in North Carolina. Smoke could hardly be seen in Mississippi, Georgia,
and Florida due to cloud interference.

Mexico/Central America...
Numerous seasonal fires were observed across eastern-southern Mexico,
Guatemala and Honduras. While the majority of the smoke was light density,
some of these smoke plumes were moderate in density. Thin density smoke
from these fires and from flaring off of oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche
moved to the north over the Bay of Campeche and along the western Gulf
of Mexico along and just off the east coast of Mexico.

DUST:
Alaska/Western Canada/Far Western U.S...
Areas of what are believed to be leftover thin density dust transported
from Asia were visible just prior to sunset over the Gulf of Alaska and
inland over far northwestern and western Canada. The dust also appeared
to be entrained into a weather system along and off the West Coast of
the U.S. though clouds interfered with detection. The possible leftover
dust then became visible again outside of the clouds along and off the
coast of southern California.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
