DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z March 27, 2019

SMOKE:
Central and South Central U.S...
A very large number of seasonal fires were detected over a sizable
portion of the Central and South Central U.S. The most concentrated
area of fires were over the eastern third of Kansas which resulted in
a patch of thin to moderate density smoke which covered much of this
area. Numerous smoke plumes were also visible scattered across Oklahoma,
southeastern Texas, along with central and southern Louisiana, and
southern Mississippi. Most of these plumes were thin density though a
few thicker plumes were present as well. Another more concentrated batch
of seasonal fires over southeastern Missouri and northeastern Arkansas
resulted in an area of thin density smoke. Other relatively smaller
smoke plumes were noted across the region stretching from central and
northern Missouri to northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

Southern Georgia/Florida...
More seasonal burning over southwestern Georgia and northern Florida
produced thin density smoke over this region.

Mexico/Central America...
The ongoing seasonal burning across a large part of Mexico and Central
America resulted in a huge mass of thin to moderately dense smoke which
generally moved to the south and off the southern coast of Mexico and
Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
