DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z April 3, 2019

SMOKE:
Central U.S...
A tremendous amount of seasonal burning was ongoing across a portion of
the Central U.S. with the most concentrated batch of fires occurring
over northeastern Oklahoma and the eastern third of Kansas. Thin to
moderate density smoke from this fire activity yesterday spread eastward
across much of Missouri, southern Iowa, northern Arkansas, Illinois,
and the western parts of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. New smoke
from the Kansas-Oklahoma activity was barely visible over and near the
active fires though passing clouds made density and extent information
difficult. Additional scattered fires and visible smoke plumes were noted
over the remainder of Oklahoma, northern and eastern Texas, Louisiana,
Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and western and central Kentucky.

Southeastern U.S...
A large amount of seasonal fire activity was scattered over much of
the Southeast from Mississippi to southwestern Georgia though cloud
cover farther to the east limited fire and smoke detection in satellite
imagery. Numerous smoke plumes of varying density were visible over
Mississippi, Alabama, and southwestern Georgia with much of the activity
moving to the southeast.

Mexico and Central America...
Significant seasonal burning continues primarily over central and
southern Mexico and Central America with areas of smoke of varying
density spread across this region and off the southern coast of Mexico
and Central America.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
