DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z April 7, 2019
SMOKE: Mexico and Honduras... Widespread fire activity was observed across central-southern Mexico, northern Guatemala and Honduras. A large area consisting of light density stagnant smoke could be seen along the Pacific coastline of southern Mexico and extending for approximately 200 miles offshore. A second large plume covered Mexico's eastern coastline and the western Gulf of Mexico. The plume was moving towards the north reaching southern Texas and the western Louisiana coastline. Additional areas of light-to-moderate density smoke were also seen along the Yucatan peninsula and northern Honduras. The smoke from those areas was traveling towards the northwest. Kansas and Iowa... Large number of agricultural fires were detected during the afternoon hours over eastern Kansas and southeast Iowa. Partial cloud coverage prevented the delineation of smoke plumes although light density smoke should be expected across those regions. WS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
