DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z April 9, 2019
SMOKE: Central Plains... Numerous agricultural fires were observed during the afternoon hours across Oklahoma, central-eastern Kansas, southeast Nebraska, Iowa, and central-western Missouri. The large concentration of fires produced a large plume covering most of Oklahoma and eastern Kansas, including several stretches consisting of moderate density smoke. The bulk of the smoke was dissipating towards the southeast towards southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas. Mexico and Honduras... High fire activity continues over central and southern Mexico and northern Honduras. The resulting smoke is covering a large portion of central and southern Mexico, extending over the Pacific to the west and over the southwest Gulf of Mexico to the east where moderate density smoke could be observed. An additional area of moderate density smoke is seen covering the Gulf of Honduras. Those three main plumes remain largely stagnant over the affected areas. WS THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
