DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z April 9, 2019

SMOKE:
Central/Southern Plains...
Numerous agricultural fires were seen across north Texas, Oklahoma, and
eastern Kansas through the morning. These fires were producing plumes
of mainly light-density smoke. Individual plume motion was primarily
northward in Texas and Oklahoma, and northwestward in Kansas. In addition,
a large area of remnant smoke from yesterday's fires in the same areas
extended from southeastern Kansas southward across east Texas to the
Gulf of Mexico. This area consisted of up to moderate-density smoke and
was drifting slowly southward

Mexico and Honduras...
Scattered fire activity was seen primarily along the Pacific coast
of Mexico and inland, as well as more concentrated fire activity in
Honduras. The fires in Mexico were producing some plumes of light-density
smoke moving in no uniform direction. Over Honduras, an area of remnant
smoke continues to be present from the past several days of fires in that
region, extending northward across much of the Gulf of Honduras. Another
area of remnant smoke was seen along the southern portion of the Mexico
Pacific coast and extending eastward over portions of Guatemala and
El Salvador.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
