DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z April 12, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S...
A significant amount of seasonal burning was observed across southeastern
U.S. along with a few smoke plumes of thin density.

Central plains...
A small number of seasonal/agricultural fires were detected across
eastern Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas, southern Missouri, and northern
Arkansas. Only a few thin density smoke plumes were seen due to cloud
coverage.

Mexico/Central America/Western Gulf of Mexico...
Numerous seasonal fires were observed over central-eastern-southern
Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. A large number of smoke plumes were
seen from the imagery during the afternoon hours, especially over the
Yucatan Peninsula. While the majority of the smoke was light density,
some of these smoke plumes were moderate in density. A relatively larger
area of thin density smoke was visible over a portion of the Bay of
Campeche and the western Gulf of Mexico extending to near the coast of
southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana.

DUST:
West Texas...
Blowing dusts were seen in Texas border with the Mexican state Chihuahua
extending east toward the north of Big Bend region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
