DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0055Z April 18, 2019

SMOKE:

Southeast US...
Fires in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina were seen emitting
light-to-moderate density smoke during the afternoon hours. Individual
smoke plumes were moving towards the west across southern Florida and
towards the northwest along the Florida panhandle. Meanwhile, smoke plumes
in Georgia and South Carolina were seen dispersing towards the northeast.

Central America/Gulf of Mexico ...
Fire activity remains very high in the entire region resulting in a
large area of moderate-to-heavy density stagnant smoke that dominates
most of central-southern Mexico and extends over the Pacific ocean and
the Gulf of Mexico. Individual smoke plumes were dispersing towards the
northwest along the Yucatan Peninsula while predominantly stagnant
across central-southern Mexico. A few large fires were also detected
in northern Mexico with moderate-to-heavy density smoke plumes moving
towards the northeast.

DUST:
Texas...
Light blowing dust was observed across northwest Texas ahead of a
low-pressure system that is now passing through the northern end of
the state.

Northern Mexico...
Blowing dust could be seen northeast of Chihuahua moving eastward in
the direction of the U.S./Texas border.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
