DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0320Z April 23, 2019
SMOKE: Southeastern U.S... A significant amount of seasonal/agricultural fires were observed across southeastern U.S. along with smoke plumes of thin density. While the smoke plumes over Lake Okeechobee were moving west, the ones in southern Georgia were moving southwest and those in South Carolina were moving southeast. Central U.S... A relatively small number of seasonal fires were detected across eastern Texas, eastern Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, Illinois, southeastern Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and southeastern Louisiana. Only a few smoke plumes of thin density were seen from afternoon imagery across Mississippi and Arkansas due to cloud coverage. North Dakota/Minnesota/Saskatchewan/Manitoba... A significant a amount of fires were observed across southern-central Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba, central-eastern North Dakota, and northwestern Minnesota. Only a few smoke plumes of thin density were seen mainly across North Dakota due to cloud coverage. Central America/Gulf of Mexico... A very significant amount of seasonal burning was detected especially over southern and eastern Mexico and Central America which resulted in an extensive coverage of smoke across these areas. While the majority of the smoke was light density, some of these smoke plumes were moderate in density. A relatively larger area of thin density smoke was visible over a portion of the Bay of Campeche and the western Gulf of Mexico extending north towards the coast of southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana. -YL/KH THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
