DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1915Z April 25, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern U.S...
A relatively small number of seasonal fires were observed across eastern
Alabama, southwestern Georgia, Florida, northeastern North Carolina,
and Southern North Carolina. Only a few smoke plumes of thin density
were seen in Florida and Georgia due to cloud coverage.

Central U.S...
A relative small amount of fires were detected across central Texas,
Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, and northwestern Missouri. Smoke plumes could
hardly be seen due to cloud interference.

North Dakota/Saskatchewan/Manitoba...
A small number of fires were observed across southern Saskatchewan,
southwestern Manitoba, and eastern North Dakota. Smoke plumes could
hardly be seen due to cloud coverage.

Mexico/Central America/Gulf of Mexico/Southern Texas...
A very significant amount of ongoing seasonal burning was noted in
satellite imagery across portions of southern and southeastern Mexico and
Central America. Moderately dense smoke was seen over the northern portion
of Central America, southeastern Mexico, and over the Bay of Campeche. A
relatively larger area of thin density smoke was seen extending north
towards the coast of southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
