DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 2, 2019

SMOKE:
Texas/Louisiana/Western Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Eastern
Pacific...
The ongoing significant amount of seasonal burning along with a number of
possible larger wildfires scattered across portions of Mexico and Central
America was responsible for a huge mass of smoke which covered much of
central and southern Mexico, Central America, the eastern Pacific to the
south of Mexico and Central America, the Bay of Campeche, the western Gulf
of Mexico, and a good portion of Texas and Louisiana. Cloudiness farther
to the north over the South Central U.S. limited additional information
on the extent of the smoke in that area. Within the larger surrounding
thinner density smoke was a sizable area of moderately dense to even
locally thick smoke which was visible over southern and southeastern
Mexico, Central America, the nearby portion of the eastern Pacific
south of the Mexico and Central America coast, the Bay of Campeche,
and the western Gulf of Mexico.

Alaska...
An early start to the fire season is unfolding over Alaska with a few
fires detected over east central Alaska including a relatively larger
fire located to the southwest of Delta Junction which was producing
a moderately dense to locally thick smoke plume which moved to the
east-southeast with the thinner density leading edge reaching into the
southwest part of the Yukon of northwestern Canada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
