DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z May 10, 2019

SMOKE:
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico/Southeastern US...
Countless fires throughout southern Mexico and Central America have been
producing copious amounts of smoke throughout the day (and previous days
as well). This smoke, ranging in density from light to heavy, extends
mainly from northern Honduras west across southern Mexico and northwest
across the Yucatan Peninsula and the Bay of Campeche into southern Texas
and north into Georgia. the most dense smoke is near the source regions
of southern Mexico and northern Honduras. This smoke has been moving
northward ahead, with forward progress stopped by a cold front along
the Gulf Coast.

Northern Plains/Southern Prairie Provinces...
Fires throughout southeastern Saskatchewan, southern Alberta, and North
Dakota were producing mainly light smoke plumes moving eastward across
Saskatchewan, southeast across Manitoba, and south across North Dakota.

Pacific Northwest...
Fires from western Montana into southern Oregon were also observed
emitting light smoke. These smoke plumes were moving mainly off towards
the southwest.

BLOWING DUST...
Southern Oregon/northwestern Nevada...
Winds out of the northeast were lofting and transporting dust from two
dry lake beds in southeastern Oregon. The dust from these sources was
reaching far northwestern Nevada and south-central Oregon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
