DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z May 11, 2019

SMOKE:
Mexico/Guatemala/Honduras/Gulf of Mexico...
Dense fire activity continues across southern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala,
and Honduras. This activity was feeding a large area of dense smoke
that covered much of Honduras, northern Guatemala, Belize, the Yucatan
Peninsula, southern Mexico, Mexico's Gulf Coast, and the western Gulf of
Mexico. Areas of less dense smoke were observed covering the rest of the
Gulf of Mexico and the immediate Gulf Coast. The smoke is generally moving
northward...but is running into a frontal boundary which has limited the
northward progression of the smoke from all the fire activity. Convective
activity along the front lofted some of this smoke and has brought it
across the eastern Gulf of Mexico as well.

Northern Plains...
Fire activity from southern Manitoba into northern Iowa was producing
mainly light smoke plumes with one or two moderate density smoke plumes
that were observed moving around a high pressure center (anticyclone)
over northwestern Iowa.

Pacific NW/Intermountain West...
Fire activity from central California into southern British Columbia and
western Montana was producing mainly light to moderate density smoke
plumes, with a heavy smoke plume or two mixed in, this afternoon and
evening. The smoke from these plumes was mainly moving southwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
