DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1801Z May 15, 2019

SMOKE:
Mexico/Gulf of Mexico...
Fire activity remains high across central-southern Mexico. A large
area of moderate-to-heavy density smoke covers most of central-southern
Mexico. The plume extends towards the southwest over the Pacific Ocean
off southern Mexico and to the north-northeast over the central Gulf of
Mexico. Pockets of heavy smoke concentration covering the Mexican states
of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and the western Gulf of Mexico.

South-Central Canada/Minnesota/Dakotas...
Fire activity remains moderate to high due to cloud coverage across the
Dakotas and into Minnesota, with a low concentration of fires extending
north into southern Manitoba, Canada. Visible smoke plumes seen in
Minnesota and the Dakotas were light-density and moving towards the
north-northeast.

Coastal Southeast U.S...
Small plumes of light to medium density smoke were visible between breaks
in cloud activity reaching from southeastern Alabama, across Georgia
and into the Carolinas. There were a hand full of medium-heavy smoke
plumes seen near the southern Alabama and Florida Panhandle moving south
towards the Gulf of Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
