DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2356Z May 26, 2019

SMOKE:
Eastern US...
Light density remnant smoke remains visible off the eastern US coast
this evening. Several notable fires located in eastern Georgia and South
Carolina are producing moderately dense smoke that is being carried out
and over the Atlantic Ocean.

Western Gulf of Mexico/Mexico/Central America/Texas...
A large number of agricultural burning in Mexico and Central America
continue to produce a considerable amount of light density smoke that
cover the area, portions of Texas, and the western Gulf of Mexico. An
area of moderately dense smoke can be seen over the Gulf as well.

Alaska/Canada/New England U.S...
A wildfire in east-central Alaska is producing localized moderately
dense smoke in the area. Wildfires located in northern Alberta are
predominantly responsible for an large area of varying density smoke
that can be seen stretching from eastern British Columbia to Manitoba.

BLOWING DUST:
An area of blowing dust was visible this evening emanating from a location
in southeastern Arizona. The dust remained attached to the source and
stretched towards the northeast and into western New Mexico.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
