DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z June 12, 2019

SMOKE:
Central Canada/Northern Plains...
Raging wildfires in northern Alberta have produced an expansive area of
varying density smoke that extends from the central Northwest Territory
and southwestern Nunavut south into northeastern Kansas and western
Missouri. The most dense smoke is over south-central Northwest Territory,
northern Alberta, and Saskatchewan, with a stripe of moderate to heavy
smoke extending south into western North Dakota. Much of the smoke of
moving off toward the east and east-southeast, with a few elements being
drawn south-southeastward across Saskatchewan.

Arizona...
The Coldwater and Woodbury fires continue to burn in central Arizona
this morning. Light remnant smoke covered muchof central Arizona and was
observed moving both toward the east-southeast and the north-northeast,
while the more dense and recently emitted smoke was moving towards
the southwest.

Mexico...
Fire activity throughout Mexico continues to produce smoke this morning
across the Pacific and Bay of Campeche coasts. Remnant smoke was observed
covering a fairly large area mainly near the Pacific coast extending
out a couple hundred miles offshore and across eastern Mexico extending
eastward across the Gulf of Mexico and the western Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
