DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z June 13, 2019
SMOKE: Western/Central Canada/Northern Plains... The large wildfires in northern Alberta continue to produce large amounts of smoke, with light density remnant smoke from these fires extending east and southeastward to the U.S. Northern Plains region. A narrow streak of moderate-density smoke also was present withing this area, extending through Saskatchewan and Manitoba to the eastern Dakotas. Additional remnant smoke also was spreading northward into the Northwest Territories. Closer to these fires, large plumes of heavy smoke extended well eastward over much of northern Alberta. Cloud cover that developed and moved into the region throughout the afternoon made it difficult to ascertain the true extent of the smoke. Arizona... The Coldwater and Woodbury fires continue to burn in central Arizona this evening. The Coldwater fire in particular was producing a large plume of very dense smoke extending east-northeastward for at least 100 miles before becoming obscured by cloud cover. The Woodbury fire was also producing a plume of dense smoke. Mexico... Fire activity throughout Mexico continues to produce smoke this evening along the Pacific coast, with remnant smoke observed covering a fairly large area extending out a couple hundred miles offshore. Also, smoke from flaring operations in the Bay of Campeche reached north and northeastward over the Gulf of Mexico until becoming obscured by cloud cover. Earlier, remnant smoke was observed across eastern Mexico extending eastward across the Gulf of Mexico and the western Bay of Campeche. MC THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE. TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/currenthms.jpg GIS: ftp://satpsanone.nesdis.noaa.gov/FIRE/HMS/GIS/ KML: http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/fire.kml (fire) http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/data/land/fire/smoke.kml (smoke) ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO: SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
