DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 01:45Z June 14, 2019

SMOKE:
Northwestern Canada/Northern Plains...
Large complex fires burning in northern/central Alberta continue to
produce large amount of smoke, with light density remnant smoke from
these fires extending east and southeastward to the U.S. Norther
Plains region. Heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity of
the fires extending well eastward over much of northern Alberta and
Saskatchewan. Additional remnant smoke also was spreading northward into
Northwest Territories.

Southwestern US/Arizona...
Several large complex fires burning in portions of north/central
Arizona and southwestern New Mexico were observed from the satellite
imagery. Heavy density smoke was visible in the vicinity of the
fires. Light density remnant smoke from these fires progressed northeast
with the weather system.

Mexico...
Fire activity throughout Mexico continues to produce a large body of light
density smoke that covered much of the Mexico and stretching offshore to
the southwest over the Pacific. Thin density smoke from these fires also
extended eastward over the Bay of Campeche and northward to southwest
US. Moderately dense smoke plumes could be seen over the Pacific coast.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
