DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z June 16, 2019

SMOKE:
Northwest-Central Canada and Northern U.S...
The large complex fires burning in northern/central Alberta continue to
produce moderate-to-heavy density smoke. The smoke plumes were traveling
SE down into the U.S. specifically the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest
regions. Due to cloud coverage, the full extent of the smoke was unknown.

Alaska...
One large complex fire in northwestern Alaska and another large complex
fire south of the Anchorage region. The remnant smoke from the two large
complex fire was stretching offshore to the southwest over the Bering
Sea. Moderate to heavy density smoke was visible in the vicinity of
the fires.

Arizona...
The Woodbury and Coldwater wildfires in central Arizona remained active
this afternoon releasing heavy-density smoke near the sources. The plumes
were dispersing towards the northeast extending into northwest New Mexico.

Mexico...
Numerous fires could still be seen along western Mexico and around the
state of Hidalgo. Relatively small pockets of moderate-density smoke
covered southern Sinaloa, western Jalisco, and the southern Gulf of
Mexico near Coatzacoalcos. Another area of light-density residual smoke
covered the western Gulf of Mexico off Tamaulipas and northern Veracruz.

DUST:
Northern Mexico/Northwest Texas...
Blowing dust was observed off northern Mexico near the border with New
Mexico. The dust was being pushed to the east and into northwest Texas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
