DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1905Z June 17, 2019

SMOKE:
Northwest-Central Canada...
The large complex fires burning in northern/central Alberta has
continued to burn through this afternoon producing heavy-density smoke
that is tracking north into the Northwest Territories, prior to cloud
cover intruding from the north. A larger area consisting of mostly
light-to-moderate density residual smoke covers much of central-northern
Alberta, extending towards the north into the Northwest Territories and
extends into neighboring Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Alaska...
The North River wildfire complex in western Alaska remains moderately
active releasing heavy density smoke. The plume is being transported
towards the southwest and into the Bering Strait. Additional light
smoke associated with a smaller fire was visible just west of the
Alaskan-Canadian border, initially heading ENE, then turning to the
southwest later in the afternoon.

Mexico...
Widespread fire activity persists along western Mexico, northwest
Veracruz, and the eastern Yucatan Peninsula. Pockets of moderate-density
smoke could be seen in the western coast of Mexico, and extending west
off of the coast. Additional smoke could be spotted originating from gas
flaring activity off the oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche moving towards
the west-northwest. A few smaller plumes associated with fires along
western and northwestern Mexico are also visible moving south and east.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
