DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1536Z June 24, 2019

SMOKE:
Eastern Canada/Northeastern United States/Atlantic off the US East
Coast....An area of light to moderate density smoke, from fires over
Alberta and Yukon, extended from south of Greenland and curved back into
portions of eastern Quebec and the Northeast United States. Another area
of smoke, with contributions from a fire over south Florida, extended
further southwest to offshore the Southeast United States.

Northern Plains....An area of remnant light smoke, from the fires over
Alberta, extended from the Northern Plains of the United States into
southern Manitoba and southern Saskatchewan.

Southern Plains....An area of remnant light smoke, from fires over New
Mexico and Arizona, extended over portions of central Texas.

Northern Canada....An area of light smoke, from the fires over Alberta and
Yukon, was extending from Nunavut west through the Northwest Territories
to northern Alberta. It is possible that smoke extends further east
towards portions of northern Quebec but widespread cloud cover was seen
over much of the region.

DUST:
Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean....A large area of Saharan Dust extended from
portions of Haiti and western Cuba west through the western Caribbean
and Yucatan Peninsula. The dust then extended north through the Gulf
of Mexico and into the Central Gulf Coast States.

TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
