DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z June 27, 2019

SMOKE:
Southeastern/Northeastern Alaska and Northwestern Canada/Yukon, Northwest
Territories, and Northern Alberta Provinces...

A large complex fire continues to burn south of Anchorage. Moderate smoke
was observed across most of the region into the city of Anchorage with
air quality alerts in place. Moderate density smoke was also observed
off to the south and east over the Northeastern Pacific. Heavy density
smoke was observed using GOES17 Visible Imagery across most of the Kenai
Peninsula out along the coast and off shore over the Northeastern Pacific
progressing south and east this morning. Several smaller complex fires
are burning in the Fairbanks region and across Northeastern Alaska. The
smoke plumes from these fires was not visible due to cloud cover in
the region but heavy density smoke was observed in the vicinity of the
fires. Moderate to heavy density smoke from these fires is progressing
into Yukon Province in Northwestern Canada and off to the South and east
with the low/upper level flow out over the Northeastern Pacific.

Moderate and heavy density smoke was across most of Yukon
Province. Several large complex fires are burning in Central Yukon
with very heavy density smoke progressing off to the South and east
this morning.

Moderate density smoke was observed across southern portions of the
Northwest Territories and into Northern Alberta Province. A large
complex fire and a smaller fire was observed in Northern Alberta with
heavy density smoke progressing southeastward this morning.

Southwestern US/Arizona,New Mexico and Utah...
Several small complex fires in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah are burning
this morning. Smoke from the fire in New Mexico is heavy progressing
north and east. Smoke from the fire in Arizona is light to moderate and
progressing northward. Smoke from the fire in Utah is moderate to heavy
and is progress Northwest and then further away from the fire off to
the Northeast this morning.

Florida/Bahamas..
Several smaller fires are burning with most of the fire activity across
North/Central Florida and a smaller fire burning in Western Palm Beach
county in the Everglades. The small fire in Palm Beach is producing
light density smoke progressing southwestward and the smaller fires
in North/Central Florida are producing light density smoke as well
progressing Northward this morning. A small complex fire is burning
in the Bahamas in North Andros with light, moderate, and heavy density
smoke progressing westward this morning.

Western Mexico..
Several smaller fires are burning across Western Mexico just inland from
the Eastern Pacific. Light density smoke was observed further from the
fires and out over the Southern Gulf of California and over the Eastern
Pacific. Moderate to heavy density smoke was observed closer and in the
vicinity of the fires. The smoke from these fires is progress south
and west this morning.

BLOWING DUST:
Caribbean Sea/Western Atlantic/Central Gulf of Mexico/Coastal Louisiana
...
Dust from the Saharan Desert in Western Africa has progress westward
across the Atlantic and is now present in portions of the Northern
Caribbean over the Northeastern Caribbean Islands. Dust is also present
over portions of the North/Central Gulf of Mexico West south of and close
to coastal Louisiana. The dust is quiet thick in portions of Eastern
Caribbean Sea over Puerto Rico, and lighter over the North/Central Gulf
by Louisiana progressing slowly westward this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
