DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z July 7, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Western Canada/Yukon/Northwestern U.S...
Numerous wildfires across Alaska and the Yukon have produced a large
area of moderate and high-density smoke reaching from the Bering Sea to
British Columbia and extending eastward across the prairie of Alberta
and Saskatchewan (joined by smoke from fires in northern Alberta)
to Manitoba and beyond. Light-density smoke from these fires also
extends southeastward across the northern Pacific Ocean to Oregon and
Washington. Additional smoke, possibly the result of fires in Siberia,
also was observed over northern Alaska.

Central and Eastern Canada/Northern and Northeastern U.S...
Wildfires in eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario have produced a
significant area of smoke extending eastward to the Canadian Atlantic
coast, southward over the northern and northeastern United States, and
northward over Hudson Bay. Within this area was a large mass of thick
smoke extending east and southward from the fires across much of Ontario,
northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, the upper and northern lower
peninsulas of Michigan, and northern New York. This smoke also covers
virtually all of the Great Lakes except for Erie and parts of Huron.

Bay of Campeche...
An area of thin density remnant smoke was present over the western Bay
of Campeche and was slowly drifting westward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
