DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z July 10, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Yukon Territory/British Columbia/North Central Canada...
Smoke from wildfire activity throughout Alaska and Yukon Territory has
produced a large shield of varying density smoke. This smoke covers an
area extending from the easternmost portions of Russia into the Yukon
and from the Beaufort Sea across Alaska into the Gulf of Alaska. A
portion of smoke from these fires has also made its way into central
British Columbia. The most dense smoke resides from over Anchorage into
south-central Yukon and from the northernmost Yukon to over the Yukon
Delta NWR in western Alaska. Light to moderate density remnant smoke
from these fires is also present across north-central Canada within a
broad low/trough of low pressure.

Northern, Central, and Eastern Canada/Northern and Northeastern U.S...
Wildfire activity across northern Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario form
the past day or two has helped to produce a large area of varying density
smoke extending from Central Canada into the North Atlantic towards the
Azores. The most dense smoke resides over the Great Lakes and near one
of the wildfire complexes in northern Alberta.

Western/Central Mexico...
Widespread fire activity persists along western Mexico, northwestern
Veracruz, and the eastern Yucatan Peninsula. Pockets of moderate density
smoke could be seen from the imagery. Light density smoke from these
fires was stretching offshore to southwest over the Pacific and northward
into the Bay of Campeche.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
