DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z July 10, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Yukon Territory/British Columbia/North Central Canada...
Smoke from wildfire activity throughout Alaska and Yukon Territory
continues to produce a large shield of varying density smoke. This
smoke covers an area extending from the easternmost portions of Russia
into the Yukon and from the Brooks Range in northern Alaska to Juneau
and northwestern British Columbia. The most dense smoke resides from
over Anchorage into much of central and southwestern Yukon. Light to
moderate density remnant smoke from these fires is also present across
north-central Canada within a broad low/trough of low pressure and in
a stripe across the Gulf of Alaska and northern British Columbia.

Northern, Central, and Eastern Canada/Northern and Eastern U.S...
Remnant smoke from wildfire activity across Alaska, northern Alberta, and
Manitoba over the past couple of days, along with smoke from active fires
in Alberta, has helped to produce a large area of varying density smoke
extending from Central Canada into the North Atlantic. The most dense
smoke resides over the Great Lakes and near one of the wildfire complexes
in east-central Alberta, from which the smoke was moving west-southwest.

Bay of Campeche...
Gas flaring from oil rigs in the Bay of Campeche were observed emitting
smoke this morning and afternoon. The smoke from this flaring activity
was moving north-northwest.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
