DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z July 11, 2019

SMOKE:
Alaska/Yukon Territory/British Columbia...
Numerous wildfires across Alaska and the Yukon have produced a wide area
of heavy-density smoke that continues to hang over the fires. This smoke,
combined with with cloud cover and the high latitude, made it difficult
to discern smoke plumes from individual fires.

Western/Central Canada/Wisconsin/Michigan...
A large area of light-density smoke was located across much of western
and Central Canada from Alberta to northern Ontario and Hudson Bay and
extending southward across Lake Superior and the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan into Wisconsin. Within this area, several fires in northern
Alberta were producing plumes of high-density smoke extending eastward
from the fires across much of the province. An additional area of
high-density smoke from the Manitoba/Ontario fires was located in a
narrow strip from northern Ontario southward to Wisconsin, and was
generally moving eastward.

Northwest Atlantic...
An area of light-density remnant smoke that likely originated from
the central Canadian wildfire activity was present from near the New
England coast to the open ocean southeast of Newfoundland. This smoke
was generally drifting eastward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF
SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED
FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE.
TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE
ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE
AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE
FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
